Academic Programs MPH/MID or MPA

Joint Degree Program with the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA)

There are two separate joint degree programs offered by the Department of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences in the Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH) and the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA). One program allows the student to obtain the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree and the Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree. The other program leads to the MPH degree and the Master of International Development (MID) degree. The MPH/MPA degrees allow students to develop broader and deeper knowledge and skills to be used in applied research and policy analysis as well as development of abilities to design and assess new models for public health services. The MPH/MID degrees are designed to prepare students for careers as public health practitioners in less economically developed societies where health issues are closely linked to the social, political, and economic problems of development.

Applicants to the joint degree program must apply separately to the MPH program in the Graduate School of Public Health Department of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences and to either the MPA or MID program in the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs. Admission requirements for each of the programs must be met.

For both joint degrees, the total number of credits required is 63 credits. Students must meet course requirements for each of the programs with possible exceptions that may be allowed through individual petition for such waivers. The joint degree program can be completed in two years (six terms) of full-time study. The program also is available to part-time students. For admission and program requirements, refer to the MPH program requirements outlined on this Web site and to the GSPIA requirements described on its Web site, www.gspia.pitt.edu.

Graduates with training in GSPH and GSPIA have secured jobs with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Allegheny County Department of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Agency for International Development, United Nations Fund for Population Activities, and the Academy for Educational Development. This is an illustrative list of organizations representing the range of employment opportunities for the graduates of this program.
