RESEARCH

My research focuses on the application of various health behavior theories to an understanding of health disparities in several areas, including cancer screening and follow-up treatment behavior, participation in medical research, and self-management of type 2 diabetes. I have used the transtheoretical model, motivational interviewing, and various frameworks for patient-provider communication to design intervention strategies to address health disparities. I collaborate with and am an affiliate faculty member of the Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion, VA HSR&D Center of Excellence, VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. I am also a faculty member of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute’s Cancer Epidemiology, Prevention, and Control Program, and I collaborate with researchers at the University of Pittsburgh's Diabetes Institute

My current research is focused on two major areas-- cancer control and diabetes control. With regard to the former, I am interested in translating evidence-based prevention and screening interventions into practice particularly in the area of colorectal cancer. My second main research area is diabetes control. Specifically, I am working with a team of researchers at the Diabetes Institute to evaluate the implementation of the Chronic Care Model (CCM) as a new approach to the treatment and management of diabetes in several communities in southwestern Pennsylvania. I am also part of a team of UPDI researchers working with the US Air Force to translate this model to military healthcare settings in Texas.

TEACHING

I teach an introductory required course for the master's and doctoral students, BCHS 2520 Theories of Health Behavior and Health Education. I also co-instruct a biostatistics course in clinical trials. I also am working on the development of a doctoral seminar on health behavior theory.

SERVICE

I am the chair of the Department of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences doctoral committee, which oversees the doctoral program.
