RESEARCH
My research interests are in global health, HIV interventions among sexual, racial and ethnic minority populations, and social determinants of health. Trained in infectious disease epidemiology and social and behavioral interventions among marginalized populations, I have worked with sexual and ethnic minority populations in urban and rural areas of Southeast Asia, and in several urban areas in the United States. Currently, I am working with local community partners in Thailand and several leading HIV interventionists in the US and Thailand to develop a community-level behavioral intervention for men who have sex with other men (MSM) in order to respond to an escalating HIV crisis. I also work with several members of the GSPH Center for Research on Health and Sexual Orientation to study the prevalence, trends and predictors of overweight and obesity among MSM in the Pitt Men’s Study.
In addition, I collaborate with another BCHS faculty, Dr. Patricia Documét, in a project using community-based participatory methods, to evaluate a male promotores program where Latino men are trained to be health outreach workers for other Latino men in the Pittsburgh community. Finally, I collaborate with Dr. Siddharth Chandra at Michigan State University to investigate the relationship between drug consumption and disease mortality, and its related ecological, social and cultural contexts using longitudinal data from British India.
TEACHING
I currently guest lecture several courses on global health, behavioral and community aspects of heath and research methodologies at the Graduate School of Public Health, the School of Medicine and the School of Social Work. I also lecture regularly at Mahidol and Huachiew Chalermprakiet Universities in Thailand.
SERVICE
I review manuscripts for several journals including AIDS & Behavior, AIDS Care and Emerging Themes of Epidemiology. I also review abstracts for the American Public Health Association and the Society for Epidemiologic Research annual meetings.
